Is clutter bogging you down? Maybe it is stealing valuable closet space? Or collecting dust on too many knick-knacks? Cut the clutter with these easy steps:
First, identify different types of clutter:
- Something you have had for more than six months and have used one time or less.
- Too many items crammed into a small space.
- Mail/papers/notes that are unsorted lying about in piles.
- Projects lying about unfinished.
- Anything you no longer have use for.
Second, identify where you want to declutter first? Some people like to start small, like a closet, fridge, or bathroom. Others like to conquer the largest area first – a garage, bedroom, or basement.
Third, sort and separate! Every item in the space should be sorted into one of the following categories:
Trash – Old mail, notes/lists, broken items or anything in bad condition. Be sure to shred any documents that may contain personal information before discarding.
Donate/Sell – Clothing or blankets in good condition, toys, trinkets, collectibles or any usable item in new/good condition.
Keep – Items that are used frequently, have strong sentimental value, or necessary for maintaining your current standard of living. You should have a space in mind for these items.
Helpful tips:
- Don’t let the space or your feelings overwhelm you.
- Put on music or listen to an audio book while you work.
- Set a timer and stop when the bell sounds.
- Share your success with a friend
- Take before and after pictures
Remember, you don’t have to declutter every nook and cranny all in one day, weekend, or month. In order to make the effects of decluttering long-lasting, daily progress is the biggest secret for success.
